Beyond the Mirror: Cultural Transcreation and the Reconfiguration of Field

"Beyond the Mirror" does not signify replication; it is the spiritual projection and identity affirmation of heterogeneous cultures across time and space. This exhibition seeks to capture the semantic drift and nascent meanings that arise when artistic signs, having traversed geographical barriers, undergo the process of cultural translation.

Tracing back to the Apennine Peninsula—to the moment Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining) sailed east bearing the laws of perspective—Western rationality and Eastern poetic essence have been interwoven in resonance ever since. Today, the Sino-European dialogue has deepened beyond mere technique, embedding itself within the philosophical bedrock of how we perceive the world. Marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Italy, we employ innovative mechanisms of "Bonded Exhibition" and "Itinerant Display" to invite the audience into a decoding of cross-cultural symbols.

The exhibition is strategically sited within the Dalian Area of the Liaoning Pilot Free Trade Zone, creating a natural convergence with the Art Museum of Luxun Academy of Fine Arts (Dalian). Here, an "economic enclave" and a "cultural enclave" overlap organically. A productive tension emerges between the efficiency-driven logic of the FTZ and the critical introspection of art, sparking unexpected alchemy. The fervent Expressionism of Michel Leonardi, the ethereal abstractions of Nathalie De Corte, and the incisive graphic lines of Daniel Sluse—transplanted directly from European ateliers to a northeastern free-trade port—reconfigure their significance amidst contextual displacement. In this shift, artistic anguish is transmuted into a profound empathy for existential resilience.

Innovation in "Bonded" systems extends art exchange into the very fabric of industry. As a pivotal conduit for two-way circulation, the Liaoning FTZ is activating the latent potential of cross-border art logistics, transforming it into new kinetic energy for regional development. This represents not merely a fusion of culture and commerce, but the infusion of vibrant cultural vitality into the Revitalization of Northeast China, inaugurating a new paradigm for China-Europe collaboration.

The ultimate vision of this exhibition is to construct a context of equitable dialogue. European works are not presented as "the Other," but as active agents colliding with and melting into the local artistic ecology of Dalian. What the viewer gazes upon is more than foreign visual expression; it is an occasion for deep speculation—through the medium of art—on the self’s relationship to the world and to life itself.
Let art serve as a mirror reflecting the path of mutual civilizational learning; let the Free Trade Zone serve as the pulse connecting the symbiosis of economy and trade. It is our hope that this exhibition empowers the revitalization of the Northeast and inscribes a new chapter in China-Europe cooperation.
