On the occasion of the approaching International Women's Day, the Airport Gallery opens its doors to welcome an encounter between Eastern and Western art. This double solo exhibition, "Twin Blossoms," brings together the exquisite works of Chinese artist Zhang Shuangfeng and Belgian artist Nathalie De Corte. Transcending geography and culture, these two female artists use the brush as their medium and the soul as their cadence, allowing their distinct yet mutually resonant artistic flowers to bloom within the same space, creating an open and profound cross-cultural dialogue.
Zhang Shuangfeng's color-ink peonies are a contemporary continuation of the Eastern spirit of 'xieyi' (lyrical abstraction). Rooted in peony culture yet breaking free from stylized expressions, she employs vibrant, unconstrained color-ink and passionate, exuberant hues to imbue the peony with a new sense of life and texture. Under her brush, the peony is not merely a cultural symbol of prosperity and auspiciousness, but a spiritual imagery with contemporary significance. She fuses personal emotion with Eastern aesthetics within ink and color, revitalizing the traditional bird-and-flower painting subject of peonies in a modern context. She both preserves the essence of peony culture and pioneers new possibilities for the color-ink era, forming a unique artistic style.
Nathalie De Corte's creations, using nature and life as their foundation, construct a spiritual garden through poetic abstraction. She draws inspiration from natural scenery, the passage of time, and the rhythms of life, distilling concrete forms into free-flowing lines, subjective colors, and textures imbued with a sense of breath. Her works are not ostentatious, yet are full of warmth; between her relaxed brushstrokes flow delicate emotions and a quiet power. Using the language of Western contemporary art, they express a most genuine love and understanding of nature and life.
One Eastern, one Western; one capturing the essence of the peony, the other painting the poetry of nature. Although Zhang Shuangfeng and Nathalie De Corte come from different cultural backgrounds and follow distinct artistic paths, they achieve a borderless resonance in their pursuit of beauty and their celebration of life. The juxtaposition of their creations is like "twin blossoms on one stalk"—each with its own fragrance, yet together they enhance each other's radiance. Here, the fervor of Eastern color-ink melds with the romance of Western abstraction, engaging the cultural of East and West in a dialogue with the contemporary spirit.
As a window for Sino-foreign artistic exchange in the city, the Tianjin Airport Gallery offers an ideal venue for this meeting of Eastern and Western art. This exhibition is not only a concentrated display of the creative achievements of the two artists but also a magnificent blossoming of the power of women in art, and a vivid practice of cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and the West. It is our hope that visitors, while viewing the exhibition, will savor the Eastern artistic conception amidst the ink, color, and floral fragrance, feel the Western poetry within subjective abstraction, and experience, in this beautiful, boundless encounter of art, the timeless charm of hearts connecting and diverse beauties coexisting in harmony.
