On the afternoon of September 13, 2024, the Aurora Museum unveiled a new exhibition titled "‘Dasein’ - Solo Exhibition of Daniel Sluse". Daniel Sluse's paintings not only embody the abstraction of early formalism but also connect Op Art and even Minimalism. At the same time, they imply what Schopenhauer once said: "All art aspires to the form of music." As the dean of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Liège, Belgium, distinct from professional artists in commercial galleries, his painting practice never caters to certain trend and market demands. In recent years, Daniel Sluse has been shuttling between China and Europe, devoting himself to cultural exchanges between China and Belgium and promoting mutual cultural integration between the two countries. This exhibition at the Aurora Museum has also become his first large-scale solo exhibition in Shanghai.

The title of this exhibition, “Dasein”, is a direct translation of the German philosophical term “dasein”. “My artworks are not closed off; instead, they explore meaningful structural forms in an open setting,” stated Daniel Sluse. Within the exhibition hall, viewers can observe the evolution of the artist’s creative process.

Folding stools, commonly nicknamed "mazha" in northern dialects, remain present in public activities such as open-air movies and square dancing. They are undoubtedly a very quintessential Chinese item. Nowadays, 1,001 red mazhas, as a set of installation works, have appeared in Hall A2 of the Aurora Museum in Shanghai's Lujiazui area, waiting for the audience to bring them back into life to explore the philosophical connotations of "Dasein".

This exhibition will run until October 13th. As one of the highlights of the 2024 Shanghai Tourism Festival, the Aurora Museum in Shanghai will extend its opening hours to 9 p.m. every Friday. Moreover, on the evening of October 4th, the “Aurora Museum Night of Wonders” parent-child activity will be launched.
